RILI students attend UP SciMath Fair

Elementary and high school students of Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI) participated in the SciMath Fair and Exhibits at the University of the Philippines Rural High School (UPRHS) in Bay, Laguna, Oct. 16-17.

High school students attended the event on Oct. 16 where they viewed exhibits and experimental set-ups. Select student from Grade 7 also participated in the Inter-High School Mural Making Contest. The team representing RILI is composed of Marcus Adrian Balinas, Apple Conte, Erilene Bulandres, and Janne Gladys Tiosen.

On Oct. 17, the elementary students visited the fair. They participated in mini-games in some of the booths in the fair.

Three of the elementary delegates from RILI also joined the Inter-Elementary Sci-Spell, a spelling contest. Representing RILI are Jacob Nathanielz Payag, Andrai Jermaine Rumawak, and Hannah Pauline Abela.

RILI teachers attended the free seminar that happened while contests were going on.

The UPRHS SciMath Fair and Exhibits is an annual event organized by the AlGeoTriCS and DTESS clubs. This year's theme is "Innovation and Sustainability: Effective Drivers for a Balanced Progressive Philippines".

Competing against the best schools in Southern Luzon, the National Capital Region, and nearby regions, Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI) landed in the top 10 among 54 contestants in the Inter-Elementary SciSpell contest, Oct. 22, at the University of the Philippines Rural High School (UPRHS) in Los Baños, Laguna during the UPRHS Science-Math Fair and Exhibits 2012.

Grade 6 student Marcus Adrian Balinas' score was one of the 10 highest which made him qualify for the semifinals. Contestants spelled words related to General Science, Basic Biology, Introductory Chemistry, Elementary Physics, Earth Science, and Environmental Science. Rovie Mae Dasmariñas (Grade 6) and Jacob Nathanielz Payag (Grade 5) also joined the competition but did not reach the semifinals.

RILI also participated in the Inter-Elementary Poster Making Contest. The school was represented by Hannah Pauline Abela (Grade 5) and Karell Anne Laluz (Grade 6).

Members of the Young Newtons Club (YNC) and other students from RILI also attended the fair. Students viewed various set-ups and displays related to mathematics and science.

Mr. Ronaldo Morales and Mrs. Jeroline Ocampo, RILI science teachers, attended a seminar for teachers which were also part of the fair. The seminar, entitled "i-Gen: Students of the Information Age", tackled various advances in information technology available for students and teachers today. Other RILI teachers present in the fair were Mr. Robby Torres, Mrs. Clarissa Almanza, and Mrs. Jennifer Alcantara.

The UPRHS Science-Math Fair and Exhibits is an event organized by the AlGeoTriCS Club and  the Delta Theta Epsilon Science Society, the official mathematics club and science club of UPRHS, respectively. This year's theme is "Making Progress through Information Management and Scientific Innovations".

Members of the Young Newtons Club (YNC), the official math and science club of Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI) attended the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs (PSYSC) Science Summit  for Region 4A held Sept. 8-9 at Caritas Don Bosco School in Biñan, Laguna. Participants to the summit include elementary and secondary students from public and private schools in the region who are active in science clubbing.

This year, the summit's theme is Scientricity: Energizing Science Clubbers for Sustainable Energy. The Young Newtons, as the club members are called, participated in group activities and lectures that further enhanced their knowledge in sustainable sources of energy.

YNC also joined the PSYSC Science Olympiad (PSO). Chirstian Espayos, Kenneth Cyrus Celso, and Ronnel Fajardo, Year IV students, represented YNC to the high school category of the PSO while Marcus Adrian Balinas (Grade 6), Jacob Nathanielz Payag (Grade 5), and Guila Mae Castañeda (Grade 6) were the club's representatives to the elementary category.

The club also participated in the Savonius Windmill competition where participating clubs made miniature windmills. Each club demonstrated how much energy is generated by their windmill.

YNC co-adviser Mr. Ronald Morales was also present in the summit. He and three other RILI teachers--Mrs. Jeroline Ocampo, Mrs. Ma. Clarissa Almanza, and Mr. Robby Torres--attended the summit's I Teach Science Seminar (ITSS). The seminar was designed to provide new inputs for high school teachers regarding sustainable energy.

Hannah Pauline Abela, Grade 5 student of Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI), won 3rd place in the Science Art competition of the division level of the Science Congress for private schools held Sept. 13 at Sta. Cruz Central School, Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Abela competed against eight other Grade 5 students from private schools in the division of Laguna.

Three other RILI students competed in the division level of the Science Congress. Marcus Adrian Balinas  placed 6th  among the 17 contestants from private schools in the Science Quiz Bee for Grade 6. Karell Anne Laluz and Jacob Nathanielz Payag competed in the Science Art for Grade 6 and Science Quiz Bee for Grade 5, respectively.

The four delegates from RILI were the district level champions in their respective categories.

Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI) dominated the district level of the Science Congress 2012 for private schools held Sept. 3 at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Academy of Pila, Laguna, Inc. (STCJA). RILI emerged as the champion in four out of the five categories where the school participated. RILI participated in the Science Quiz Bee and in the Sci-art contest.

In the Grade 6 level of the quiz bee, RILI student Marcus Adrian Balinas grabbed the top spot with 26 points followed by the representatives from South Greenville School (SGS) and STCJA who earned 25 and 11 points, respectively. Grade 5 RILI student Jacob Nathanielz Payag also landed in the 1st place by earning 29 points. SGS landed in the 2nd place and STCJA in the 3rd by earning 22 and 5 points, respectively. Ron Wesley Gonzales, RILI's Grade 4 representative, landed in the third spot, while STCJA and SGS landed in the 1st and 2nd place, respectively.

RILI also won in the Grade 5 and Grade 6 categories of the Sci-Art competition. Hannah Pauline Abela (Grade 5) and Karell Anne Laluz (Grade 6) both won 1st place in their respective categories. The two representatives from STCJA grabbed the 2nd place.

Champions of each category will represent Pila district in the division level of the Science Congress on Sept. 12-13.

RILI's representatives were coached by elementary science teacher and Grade 6 adviser Mrs. Jeroline Ocampo. Year I adviser Ms. Perla Drilon acted as one of the scorers for the quiz bee.

San Antonio de Padua College (SAPC) and Integrated Christian School of Pila, Inc. (ICSPI) attended the Science Congress orientation but reportedly backed out of the competition.

RILI forms new math-sci club, elects new officers

Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI) is revitalizing its math and science clubs by forming a new math and science club. The new club, named Young Newtons Club (YNC), is composed of math and science enthusiasts from Grade 4-6, Grade 7, and Year II-IV.

YNC elected its officers Aug. 16. Ronnel Fajardo from Year IV was elected president. Other officers are Jacob Nathanielz Payag from Grade 5, vice president; Shane Corales from Year II, secretary; and Vanessa Oca from Grade 6, treasurer.

The club aims to promote excellence in science and mathematics among the students of (RILI) by coming up with various activities that will help raise students' curiosity and awareness of these subjects.

One of the club's first activities include joining the coming Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs' (PSYSC) summit to be held Sept. 8-9.

Payag Places 6th in Reg'l Sci Quiz

Jacob Nathanielz Payag earned the 6th place in the Science Quiz for Grade 4 category of the Regional Children's Science Congress (RCSC), January 11-12 at the National Education Academy of the Philippines (NEAP) CALABARZON in Malvar, Batangas.

Payag represented Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI) and competed against 21 other contestants both from private and public schools in the CALABARZON region. He earned a total of 18 points out of the possible 35 to secure the 6th place together with two other contestants. The over-all winner from Princeton Science School in Batangas City earned 29 points.

Payag, from Grade 4-Brown, earlier competed in the district and division levels of the Science Quiz where he emerged as the winner.

The Science Quiz is just one of the many contests held in the RCSC. Contests in science investigatory projects, sci-journalism, and sci-art were also held.

Payag Grabs 1st Place in Division Science Quiz

With just two mistakes in the easy round, Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI) student Jacob Nathanielz Payag won first place in the Division Science Quiz held Sept. 15 at Francisco Benitez Memorial School in Pagsanjan, Laguna.

Payag, from IV-Brown, competed against 14 other Grade 4 students in the Division of Laguna. These students are their district's respective winners.

RILI earned a total of 33 points to win first place. Lumban Academy was at second place with 29 points and Pagsanjan Academy was at third with 28.

The Division Science Quiz is part of the Division Science Fair organized by the Department of Education and is participated by schools in the Division of Laguna.

Payag will be competing in the upcoming Regional Science Quiz. He is coached by Mrs. Bienvenida Mariano, RILI's elementary science teacher.

Payag Wins District Science Quiz

Jacob Nathanielz Payag (Grade IV-Brown) won in the district level of the Science Quiz held Sept. 9 at Pila Elementary School. The science quiz is part of the District Science Fair which include other science-related contests for students and teachers as well.

Payag will be competing in the division level of the science quiz to be held Sept. 15 at Pagsanjan Central School.

Other schools which competed in the District Level Science Quiz were St. Therese of the Child Jesus Academy (2nd place), South Greenville School, and Integrated Christian School of Pila, Inc.
