Bahaghari bags gold, silver in folk dance contest

The Bahaghari Cultural Dance Group (BCDG), the official folk dance group of Rainbow Institute of Learning, Inc. (RILI), took home the championship in the 1st Invitational Folk Dance and Folk Songs Competition in the high school folk dance category, March 2, 2015, at the Pila Municipal Grounds. The group also landed in second place in the elementary folk dance category.

The high school members of the Bahaghari Cultural Dance Group flitted around the bamboo sticks with ease like the bird tikling from which the dance Tinikling got its name. They wowed the judges and took home the championship.

The BCDG high school team performed the Tinikling, a dance requiring speed and precision as dancers are required to dance in and around colliding bamboo sticks. The team won the judges' high marks with high leaps, fast moves, and smooth pattern transitions. They bested SCAFOLD of Linga National High School (LNHS) which took the second place; and Liksilaw Dance Troupe of San Antonio de Padua College Foundation of Pila, Laguna, Inc. (SAPC) which took the third spot.

The BCDG elementary students, meanwhile, made the audience smile with their performance of Lapay Bantigue, a folk dance from Masbate imitating sea gulls. They took the second place behind champions Labuin Elementary School. Pila Central Elementary School took the third place while Pook Elementary School placed fourth.

BCDG members from the elementary department flapped and waddled like sea gulls while performing the Lapay Bantigue. Their performance landed them in second place.

In the folk songs category, elementary and secondary students competed against each other. RILI was represented by Hannah Joyce Desoloc (Grade 5). She sang the Tagalog folk song Basta't Mahal Kita. A high school student from SAPC was declared the winner.

The contest was organized by the Girl Scouts of the Philippines Laguna Council and LNHS in cooperation with RILI.
